The Silver Comet Half Marathon and Full Marathon race day is almost here!  We just want to remind runners of a few things:

1) This year packet pick-up will be morning of race only. We apologize for any inconvenience, our wonderful Race Director (Dana Greene) is in grad school and has midterms this week so a Friday packet pick-up was not feasible. Please arrive early to plan for this, our race volunteers will be working very hard to get all runners their packets in a quick, timely manner. Thank you for your understanding!

2) T-Shirts will be handed out at the finish line ONLY, you must have your race bib to pick up shirt!

3) Floyd Road is under construction! Please be aware that there are no sidewalks between the Mable House Arts Center & Kroger/Floyd Middle. Please ARRIVE EARLY, carpool, obey all parking attendants, and use caution. A lane will be closed between Kroger and the Mable House Arts Center from 5:30am to 7:30am before race start for participants parking at offsite locations who will be walking to the start.This mile section is not smooth, may have groove or dips- please use caution & arrive early to avoid any trouble reaching the start. 4) Gear check will not be available for Half Marathon runners, please plan accordingly.

5) PLEASE NOTE: Energy gels will be given at the beginning of the race, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not drop gel packaging on the road or Silver Comet Trail. Trash cans will be at water stations where these can be disposed of. We will not have geld as a handout next year if littering is a problem.

Race Day Info: Please Note – The race Starts at Mable House Arts Center at 7:45am – 5239 Floyd Road – Floyd Road is under construction for widening – from the Mable House, down to Publix – there are NO SIDEWALKS – DOT will shut down one lane of traffic for participants to walk from Floyd Middle School, Kroger lots to the Arts Center at 5:30 a.m.– Shuttles will not run before the race – Please carpool, be cautious on the entire first mile of the race course – as there may be cones, or uneven pavement – Shuttles will return all race participants to either the Mable House Arts Center or Floyd Middle school after the race. Race number pick up & Late Registration is Friday October 26, 3:30 to 6:30 only – location TBD, OR beginning at 5:30am (same location) race day – Late registrations will be accepted for the Half Marathon – $95 cash or check and the 2nd Annual Marathon – $130 cash or check.  Nearly $8,000 will be donated to our local community charities and schools this year.  The three mountain bikes we purchased in 2008 for the Cobb County Fire Dept EMS bike team will be out on the trail with you Saturday. We will have bins available for any nearly new shoes, run shorts, bras or gear that you would like to donate to the kids we support – children size shoes are a great need, jog bras for our teens & larger shoe sizes for men.  Please only bring nearly new items – these kids need gear for running the entire season.If you need details on parking, portalets, road crossings, etc. – please see our map at https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=217756231758844021349.0004cc48b6a5813901a12&msa=0&ll=33.863289,-84.655323&spn=0.109187,0.264187    You can zoom in on markers for details – the half marathon mile markers are only noted going out to turnaround – but potties, water stops, parking, shuttle locations etc.  are noted here – spectators can also get driving directions –PLEASE NOTE: Race registration is limited for YOU – the registered participant.  We do not want it to be over crowded, unsafe, nor do we want to run out of water, race supplies or have additional lines for Pit Stop Units etc.  Refunds, race number transfers and deferrals are not allowed.  Allowing another to run in your place of different sex, age or ability will make all other results in your age category skewed & unfair.  Please do not give your numbers to other people.  We want each of YOU to have a great experience and find that the Silver Comet Races are near the best in Atlanta!  Each of YOU make this such a great, productive and charitable event  - Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding!!  Generous donations are made to our schools and Charities – so no race entry goes to “waste!”

HALF MARATHON & MARATHON Start Time: Saturday, October 26, 2013, 7:45am

Race Rules: No Baby Strollers will be allowed due to the crowd.  No dogs.  No Skates. No HEADPHONES (You need to hear participant and official announcements along the course – passing, bikes ahead, EMS etc. -)– the trail is beautiful, enjoy the run! All of these rules are insisted upon by Cobb County and USATF.  Your safety is of utmost importance.  DO NOT attempt to transfer your number to another person – Your number serves as your emergency identification in case of an emergency.

Half Marathon participants that walk – Please be aware that the marathon runners are excepted to start finishing about 3:15 or 3:30 after race start – PLEASE stay to your right – don’t block the trail & listen for police lead!

Number Pickup: Packet/ Number pick up location TBD. BRING ID – Pick up for other participants will not be allowed Friday night. We are using bib tag timing. Lost bibs can not be replaced.

Race Photos:  Photos will be posted at True Speed Photo.com after the race.

AWARDS:Awards will be given out based on GUN TIME – (not Mat Time) – According to USATF rules –

PLEASE know that some places may change due to gun time – Line up at start accordingly. Custom Lillie Glass awards will be presented to the Top Three Males & Females & Top Three Masters Males & Females – Age Group Awards are presented to top three in each age group from 14 & under to 70 & older

Overall, Masters & 1st Place Age Group winners will receive a Silver Comet Bag, USB drive, Autobell Car Wash & double insulated travel mug!

All finishers receive a custom finisher medal. 

 Post Race Activities:
After-race snacks & water  provided by Get Fit Atlanta, Kroger, Atlanta Bread Co., Stevi B’s, Dunkin Donuts.
Buses will take all race finishers, volunteers, & spectators back to the Mable House Art Center & Floyd Middle School Parking areas after the race.
All racers must take shuttles back to their vehicles after the race!
3. Spectator Info:  We do not have designated parking for Spectators – If they do not ride the shuttles from the start line at the start of the race – they may NOT park at the finish line area – even after race starts – the parking lot must remain open to public & not filled with race spectators or participants – violators will be towed.

FROM: Mable House Arts Center – Turn Right on Floyd - Left on Anderson Mill Road (Just past the Silver Comet Bike Depot – The Silver Comet Bike Depot is the finish Line – NO PARKING IS AVAILABLE HERE)- Brookwood is the first intersection on Anderson Mill – Water Stop one is at the Brookwood Trail crossing on the west side of the trail.- Stay straight on Anderson Mill.  The Trail Crossing is 1.9 miles– (Cross over Austell and go just over ½ mile further).  Water stop 2 is here on Anderson Mill at the Trail Crossing on the west side.- Continue down Anderson Mill to Stop Sign  (7/10ths of a mile from the trail)– Turn Right onto Flint Hill Road – Go 8/10ths of a mile.- At the stop sign – Turn Right on Ewing– Cross Bridge & Make an immediate left back onto Flint Hill Road.  Industry is almost exactly one mile down on the left – Just before Powder Springs Road.  Water stop 3 is down Industry at the Trail Crossing –At Powder Springs Road – Turn Left. – (Pass Carter on left) at 1.2 miles you reach Old Powder Springs Road – There is a Q-T on the right – exactly 2/10ths past the Q-T is a left hand turn lane that turns down into a Silver Comet Trail Parking Lot – This is a trail Access – The turn – around is to the right & the 4th Water stop is to the left 100 yards at the benches…To come back – turn the directions around or when you pull out of Silver Comet Trail Parking Lot turn right on Powder Springs Road, Flint Hill is1.2 miles down on the right or the East West Connector is 2.5 miles down on the right.  Take the East West Connector back down to Floyd  – Turn Right on Floyd & the Silver Comet Bike Depot is just over a mile down on the right.

Start:  Mable House Cultural Arts Center (5239 Floyd Rd SW, Mableton, GA 30126, USA)
Finish:  Silver Comet Bike Depot & Trail Head at Floyd Road.
Finish Line:  The Finish Line Celebration will be in the lower parking at the Silver Comet Depot Trail Head. All half marathon finishers receive a finisher medal, long sleeve tech t-shirt (white are 100% poly & colors are dri blend) & a reusable Silver Comet Races bike bottle provided by Get Fit Atlanta bike bottle.

5. Directions Shuttles and Parking:

1. Take I-285 W on the top end perimeter, exit on Atlanta Road.
2. Turn northwest (heading outside the perimeter).
3. Go two stoplights & turn left onto the four lane Cumberland Parkway, which turns into the East-West Connector.
4. Drive ~6 miles and turn left onto Floyd Rd.
5. Parking is available at Floyd Middle School  (participants must walk to start) on the left ~2 miles down Floyd Rd. & at Mable House Arts Center (overflow is in catholic church behind arts center) at 3 miles down on left – USE CAUTION – ROAD IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION – PEDESTRIANS WILL BE ON ROADS
Parking:   Arrive early! All participants who park away from Mable House must walk to race start!   Please see parking notes – available & restricted  – Here
Parking is not authorized anywhere else — if you choose to park elsewhere, please note all posted parking restrictions and stay away from local store fronts as you could be towed.    The Mable House is a historic site. In order to help keep the grounds preserved please obey all instructions provided by  Cobb County Police Explorers and carpool if possible.  Do not park at the post office, library, or near any business – YOU WILL BE TOWED!!! If you are late, we will be gone to the finish line – no one stays behind at the Mable House.

Shuttle Buses: – FUN RUNNERS & Spectators TAKE NOTE –

*Shuttles are provided to transport participants from the finish line at the bike depot back to the parking locations after the race ONLY – We do not provide shuttles before the race start for participants from their cars to the Mable House if you park off site (at Floyd Middle School).   Two Shuttles will leave the start line area at the Mable House with all Fun Run participants & any spectators and volunteers who want to see runners at the Bike Depot before the race start – 3 buses will leave after the race start & transport any remaining spectators and volunteers to the finish line.  Spectators are welcome to ride the buses back to parking with participants after the race.  The shuttles after the race will be at the top of the parking lot on the road that runs by the bike depot buses. DO NOT come down into the parking lot you will need to walk up the parking lot to the actual Bike Depot building to line up.

FUN RUNNERS:  Buses will take all fun run participants & spectators (family, friends) and many of our volunteers to the Silver Comet Depot / finish line area BEFORE the start of the Half Marathon.  Please load onto the two buses in the drive beside the arts center buses starting at 7:00am – all Fun Run participants should be on the buses by 7:25am as the buses will depart the start area at 7:30 prior to the start of the race.  Three buses stay behind the race start for additional spectators. – All fun run participants must go to the fun run start at the Silver Comet Bike Depot on the race provided shuttles – Number pickup, tshirts – check in – Everything

6. Course Map and Information:
The Half Marathon is USATF certified. USATF Certification #GA12125WC.

The RACE START and TIMING:  The Marathon & Half Marathon will start together.

Race starts at the Mable House Art Center – 7:45am sharp.  PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS THE FIRST MILE – All participants  marathoners will be lined up on the drive behind the Mable House beginning at 7:30am – Participants will be led out the back drive and turn onto Floyd at the Clay Road intersection to walk up to the start – DO NOT GO INTO FLOYD ROAD until race officials instruct you to do so – We do not have pace groups – HOWEVER – there will be signage for lining up in approximate Minute per Mile Groups from 7:00 and under to 14:00 minute miles and over – PLEASE ATTEMPT TO LINE UP ACCORDING TO YOUR ABILITY.  This will help with the crowds – and getting spread out properly before hitting the trail. WE HAVE A START MAT for your timing chip – so you will not lose the time it takes you to cross the mat.  There will also be a mat at the finish line – once you cross the finish line, please keep moving down into the parking lot to keep the finish line free of congestion!  Finisher shirts will be available after you finish the race!

The Half Marathon Race Course:

Racers head North on Floyd Road 1.5 miles.  Then turn Left/West on the Silver Comet Trail at the Silver Comet Depot Trail Head.  Out approximately 5.75 miles, turnaround & finish at the Silver Comet Depot.  Please BE CAREFUL turning onto the trail – It will be crowded in the beginning & near the middle at the turnaround.  Run on the right hand side of the trail.  PLEASE BE AWARE RUNNERS WILL BE RETURNING ON YOUR LEFT!!!  Listen for announcements being called out long the course.

Water will be located at the 2-mile mark & every 1.5 miles thereafter.  PowerAde will be available at the water stop closest to the race turnaround only. (Just before mile 7 and at Mile 8)  Please dispose of cups at/near the water stops and in available trash cans!     Dispose of all Gel packets at water stops so our volunteers can get all trash off the trail.  Please Don’t Litter the Trail & HALF MARATHONERS – DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE FROM THE MARATHON AID STATION TABLES – SEPARATE TABLES ARE AT EACH WATER STOP LOCATION FOR OUR FULL MARATHON RUNNERS ONLY.  PLEASE RESPECT THEIR AID STATIONS.

Pit Stop Units will be at the Industry Road crossing, and at the trail entrance just beyond the 4th water stop in powder springs just before the turnaround – these are the only ‘Pit Stops’ on the course. –Units will be at the start & finish line.

 WEATHER – Please dress appropriately for the weather. We will not provide a gear check this year – If you want to drop a layer,  do so in the half mile after turning onto the trail only- NOT on street or past 1st ½ mile of trail. We will put all clothes in a pile near finish line & leave for you to collect after the race – Any items not retrieved by you will be donated to a local shelter.  Do NOT discard valuable clothing (we cannot assure it will be retrieved & do not discard clothing further out the trail unless you do so in available trash cans.

8. Charity Spots and Fundraising:
Charity spots are available for $150.
In past years, we’ve raised over $3200 additional funds for our volunteer school booster clubs. These cross country and track team clubs from Campbell, Pebblebrook and South Cobb High Schools work our water stops, mile splits, and start and finish lines.  But this year, we’re also working with the Cobb County Fire Department and Police Department Explorers.  These youth learn valuable leadership skills, build confidence, and explore a possible career in our law enforcement institutions! Some of our donations fund expenses of these programs for youth Explorers.  $100 of the charity spot fees will be donated directly to one of these four schools to support their program’s Track and Cross Country team, or to the Explorers program. The remaining $50 fee goes towards your entry to the Half. Please consider this option when you register!!
It’s a very exciting fundraiser for these programs.
Other Fundraising:   Donations of nearly new run shoes, shorts, gear, bras are also accepted at packet pick up & the race start location – these items should be in good shape please – we donate these items to youth who do not have proper gear for training.  These donations will help support local youth who might not otherwise have a chance to run.
Just this fall we have awarded well over  85 pairs of running shoes to local cross country and track teams. These kids wouldn’t have been able to afford shoes otherwise!
